Carya
Carya – The King of Nut Trees

The Carya, better known as the pecan or hickory tree, is a majestic and resilient tree, celebrated for its nutritious, flavourful nuts and strong wood. Originally from North America, it belongs to the walnut family (Juglandaceae). Thanks to its hardy nature, deep root system, and elegant appearance, Carya is a valuable asset for nature lovers, food production (edible forest gardens, food forests, nut cultivation), woodworkers, landscapers, and conservation efforts.

More About the Carya

The Carya-Family

The Carya family includes various species of nut trees native to North America and part of the walnut family (Juglandaceae), each with unique characteristics and uses.

One of the best-known species is Carya illinoinensis, commonly known as the pecan tree, cherished worldwide for its rich-flavored and nutritious pecans. Carya laciniosa and Carya ovata are types of hickory trees, renowned for their exceptionally strong and durable wood, often used in tools, furniture, and for smoking food. Their edible nuts are a valuable source of nutrition for both humans and wildlife

Within this family, fascinating hybrids have emerged, such as Hican, Bitcan, and Hybrid Hickory. These combine traits from different Carya species, often resulting in improved growth patterns and higher nut yields. Some notable hybrids include:

  • Carya illinoinensis × Carya ovata (Hican)
  • Carya illinoinensis × Carya laciniosa (Hican)
  • Carya laciniosa × Carya ovata (Hybrid Hickory)
  • Carya illinoinensis × Carya cordiformis (Bitcan)
